On October 29, 2025, the KidsAbility Guelph site held their second annual “sensory-friendly trick-or-treat” event for clients, siblings, and members of the public who preferred a quieter, indoor, single-level event for their young ones. About 65 kids visited, and the event was well supported by Guelph Rotarians and friends who volunteered as “hosts” in the 10 rooms set up for this. It was great!
The wonderful staff from KidsAbility had done all the arranging and decorating and remained on-hand to offer any special assistance to kids or parents. The friendly volunteers “hosted” a room and waited for “customers” to arrive at the door. The kids could then knock and call out “Trick or Treat!” or press a speech button that said it for them, or point at a picture. At each room, there was a choice of an edible or non-edible treat, with choice guided by parents … if they were quick enough to stop small hands diving into the candy bucket! There was also a Quiet Room for anyone who became overwhelmed, and an Activity Room for excited kids who still needed to burn off some energy. It was a magical event and a wonderful time for all involved. Back again next year!
As an extra treat, each family received the gift of a puzzle designed and produced by Guelphite Ashley Kizis who was also on-hand to explain how it was a “Puzzle with a Purpose”. Some of the “kidfolk” in the puzzle are wearing a hearing aid and doing sign language, while some have a white cane and guide dog, or assistive wheelchairs. One has a therapy dog helping her to process “big feelings”, and some characters have invisible disabilities. Ashley believes her puzzles create an opportunity for adults to have important conversations with children about neurodiversities that they may encounter in others.
