A short video about Guelph's Rotary Forest project has been entered in a Rotary International contest. Please watch our video and vote for it! A cash prize would help us plant more trees, and the seven best videos in the contest (i.e. most votes) will be rewarded with a local zoom conference with Rotary International's president, Holger Knaack. This Rotary International video challenge is being sponsored by ESRAG - The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group - to inspire and engage Rotarians all across the globe in RI's new "Protecting the Environment" Area of Focus. Protecting the Environment has become Rotary International's seventh area of focus, and global grant applications for environmental projects will be accepted beginning on 1 July 2021.
This decision follows many years of lobbying and projects by Rotarians who understand that the whole world is their backyard. They can see the effects of climate change in communities they care about.
The other six Areas of Focus for Rotary International are:
- Peacebuilding and conflict prevention;
- Disease prevention and treatment;
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene;
- Maternal and child health;
- Basic education and literacy; and
- Community economic development.
The Rotary Club of Guelph has long had an active Environment Committee to develop and deliver projects to enhance the quality of the local environment and quality of life in Guelph. Its current major project is a 13-year commitment to replant 100 acres near Guelph Lake, known as The Rotary Forest, with completion planned for 2021 (which might be a little delayed, due to Covid-19).
