Art and Artifacts of the Odawa Anishinabe

THIS MEETING WILL BE IN-PERSON ONLY, AT THE ICC, DUE TO HANDLING OF ARTIFACTS.

NO ZOOM LINK THIS WEEK.

June is National Indigenous History Month, an opportunity to celeberate and learn about the rich history and heritage of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

On June 17, our club's Indigenous Awareness Committee is honoured to welcome our guest speaker, Michael 'Cy' Cywink, an Indigenous Cultural Arts Educator and Curator - also acclaimed as an Artist, Author, Muralist and Storyteller. He will share the history of the Odawa Anishinabe – Three Fires Confederacy of Manitoulin Island. This will include their migrations on Turtle Island, main stopping locations from Manitoulin to the Gulf of Mexico, and Encountering the Crown, 1763 -1764. He will show some artifacts, ancient stone tools, and contemporary art as well as contemporary stone works which are used as replicas in museum displays.

You may also have heard about Cy through his remarkable projects since the 1980s in helping some 50 schools to create stunning Indigenous wall murals in their schools - the latest one being at Waverley Drive Public School right here in Guelph. Through these projects, the students gain appreciation for First Nations culture and history while expressing their own artistic abilities and creating lasting memories for themselves and those who follow. The results are simply stunning, as you can see from this wonderful CTV story online HERE. Take a look!
