Program: Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, first female Rotary Club president

Messages this week from our Club President, Tracey Curtis

Several guests attended this week's meeting and Tracey welcomed everyone ... for today and any Friday! We had another wonderful meeting today, where time just flew by.
________

October 24 is World Polio Day. We usually have a flag-raising ceremony with the mayor in front of Guelph City Hall, but it can't happen this year due to Covid. Tracey took a few moments today to talk about the "plus" in PolioPlus. Read more on our website. Our donations to The Rotary Foundation continue to help fund this amazing global program - and we can't stop until the job is done!
________

Tracey called on Gisella Gazzola, one of our newer members, to introduce the virtual Paint Night our club will host on October 25, via Zoom. Find more details on our website. Spread the word! Register here

________

Liz Sandals warmly thanked members for meeting our first goal of raising $1,000 in donations to purchase Winter Wear for children in need. This shopping will be done in the coming days, and the items distributed through HOPE House and Immigrant Services. Our second goal is to raise $2,000 to support at least two families in Adopt-A-Family. Members are invited to donate to our club's campaign on Canada Helps, and we are well on our way towards reaching this goal, too. Heartfelt thanks, Rotarians!
________

Tracey reported that the Digital Duck Race raised $17,450 this year, a portion of which will come to our club to support our projects. Many thanks to everyone for their support in purchasing ducks! The prize winners are listed on our website

Noticing that fellow Rotarians from other nearby clubs were attending our meeting, Tracey invited them to share news from their clubs. Wow. So many amazing Rotary activities.
  • Linda Craig from the Rotary Club of Guelph South mentioned their new fundraiser based on the donation to their club of a large collection of stunning nutcracker ornaments, large and small. While they prepare for an online auction, they are running a fun photo contest  with a special nutcracker named "Merlin" visiting home gardens for photo opportunities. The photos are then posted in this Facebook Group. Take a look, and invite Merlin to your place for a visit and photo. Email his chauffeur, Celia Clark, to book an appointment. There's even a chance to give Merlin a forever home with you if your photo gets the most "likes". Get creative!
  • Barb Evoy from the Rotary Club of Fergus Elora reported that the Emergency Department at the new Groves Hospital has named its Emergency Department with their Rotary name in recognition of their club's donations to the Groves Hospital Foundation. Bruce McLeish mentioned their club is starting their annual cheese sale fundraiser soon. Sounds good! We'll be watching for details.
  • Darlene Carpenter from the Rotary Club of Guelph-Trillium mentioned their club's focus on "Service" in this Rotary Centennial year (see article on our website). They also helped raise $104,000 with this year's virtual Tour de Guelph. And they invite all Rotarians and guests to attend their club meeting on November 4 to hear Dr. Isaac Bogosh (as seen on CBC) speak about COVID.
