Resignation

It is with sadness that we received a letter of resignation from our faithful member Fred Neufeld who has been a member of our club for 40 years and 10 months. His smiling face will be missed around the table on Fridays. Look in the next week under Stories on ClubRunner for a biography of Fred posted on ClubRunner.

Announcements

Jane Armstrong – Reminded everyone to sign up for Sparkles through the email sent from her recently. We really need your support for this important fundraiser.

Helmuth Sliserenko – Sadly informed us that he has sold out of Local Lager gift packs, but brightened our day by announcing that he has ordered another 50.

Helmuth Sliserenko & Richard Broadwith -Given the club assembly discussion at lunch we thought it would be useful to update members of the club on the Rotary Local Lager Project by providing our most recent newsletter and a brief synopsis of the results to date.

We continue to make steady progress in signing up new partners as noted in the newsletter and we have learned quite a lot in this inaugural year. Given the established platform we expect to be able to more than double the revenues next year - you can all help by buying this gold medal winning beer and or recommending it to friends and family and asking for it at your favorite restaurant etc.  Clubs do make extra moneys from the sale of the beer at their events as we hope to do with the beer tent at Canada Day this coming year. In any event we are making new friends and contacts even though it is thirsty work. Any issues, comments or suggestions give either of us a call. Cheers for now Helmuth and Richard

Ranjit Singh – Announced his version of the Christmas Story. He was raised as a Hindu in Guyana. At age 3 he remembers his father sprinkling white flour on the floor up to the Christmas Tree, putting on his “Wellies” (boots), marching over to the tree and eating the cookies left out for Santa. No mention of the Christ Child but joyous memories anyway.

Happy Bucks

Jim MacKenzie – is happy to be back in Canada for a while although he needs to keep up his frequent flyer points up with return trips to Scotland frequently.

Tracey McGrath – Gave a Happy buck to see Rotaract Members out at the club. Then proceeded to fill us in on Bracelet of Hope’s fundraiser held at Linamar’s Centre on Woodlawn Road at which $70,000 was raised for 6 mobile health units for Lesotho. These should be in place by 2020. Currently 54 children are in care through past fundraising activities.  Danny Liu, a Guelph pharmacist, was mentioned as an amazing donor of $80,000 to the cause. This outlines the wonderful giving of many Guelphites to care for those who need our help.

Sue Ricketts – Announced the availability of website sponsorship to members. On the home page of ClubRunner click on the Download the website sponsorship guide under the ad on the right-hand side. Only 4 are needed to cover our monthly costs. Please support our Club Communications.
Sue also announced a sad buck that her granddaughter had to undergo surgery for appendicitis last week. However, surgery was delayed for some hours because although she had all the symptoms of pain, nausea, fever, etc. they couldn’t find her appendix. Apparently, it was located at the top part of her intestine instead of the lower part. But it’s all gone now.

Rosemary Clark – was very happy to see that John F. Wood donated $7 million to U of G’s College of Business and Economics

Aldo Vilanovich – is still very happy to be part of our club. He noted we have more committees than his Bolton club has members – 30
Avtar Kambo – happily announced that today is also remarkable besides his induction into Rotary because it is his 8 year old nephew’s birthday. Double celebrations.

Annual General Meeting

The leadership head table presented the Financial Statements from June 30, 2018 and the Budget for the 2018-2019 year. These are posted under in the Members Area under Organization > Committees > Board > Documents > Main > Minutes Board of Directors in the Members area for viewing. Trevor Lee is our main Treasurer and Ian Smith oversees accounting for fundraising moneys.   Most don’t realize that we are almost a $400,000 per year organization. Funds for club operation such as meals, hall rental, etc. are all covered by members dues. Our fundraising events such as Canada Day, Sparkles, Lobsterfest are used by various committees to “Do good locally and in the World”.
We honour these two gentlemen and all the volunteer Executives of our club for the invaluable work they do on our behalf.
Discussions arising were mainly around whether Canada Day which netted $4,297 is worth all the effort and time put in. Comments were made regarding the risk and responsibilities of such a large event with 40,000 attendees with little benefit. Tracey McGrath, who along with Marva Wisdom, is in charge of the 2019 event announced that they are making some changes which they hope will help – a beer tent and removal of the Kids Bouncy Castle & Slide which is not good in hot weather.
Other discussion was about the $100,000 needing to be raised for Centennial 2020 projects. Incoming President Carolyn Weatherson announced that in her year they hope to raise $50,000 through a project for which a committee is being set up by Aldo Vilanovich.  This committee will do the same for the anniversary year.
To view the financial statements you must go to the Members area of ClubRunner and click on Organization > Committees > Board of Directors - > Main. Only club members can view.

101 Things about Rotary
The beginnings of Rotary

On February 23, 1905, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary Club meeting They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotating meeting locations.
