OUR RECENT CLUB PROGRAM
Friday, May 8, 2026:
Science Fair Winners
We heard from brilliant high school students Vera Golubitsky and Kira Egete.
Vera and Kira are young researchers who competed in the Waterloo Wellington Science and Engineering Fair 2026 and won. They, with seven other students out of hundreds, are heading to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Edmonton, AB, starting May 23rd. In Edmonton, they will compete with students from all across Canada.
Kira’s project is called “Nutty for Colour” and it was about squirrels.
Vera’s project was called “Using Light Curve Data to Predict the Movement of Dark Matter”. ('Active Galactic Nuclei', anyone?) It was impressive to learn how Vera had obtained NASA data through PhD students at Harvard, and how she hopes to continue her post-high school studies in fields related to math, science and astrophysics.
We were astounded by their presentations, and they calmly handled many questions for the floor with a thoroughly engaged audience.
Learn more about our club's long history with this Science and Engineering Fair. For more than 50 years, our club has been a supporter, financially and through service. Over the years, Rotarians have served on the WWSEF board as president or member, judged projects, acted as chaperones, awarded prizes, organized celebrations, and even helped out at the Canada-wide science fair. Our club involvement has been extensive. Many thanks to our club's Children, Youth & Vocational Service committee, and special thanks to Bonnie Evans in particular for her continued support of this science fair and our club's involvement.
