Messages this week from our Club President, Tracey Curtis

  • Lobsterfest 2020 takes place on Saturday, September 26 in a different way this year. Delicious dinners that are pre-ordered by September 17 can be picked up from the ICC on September 26 between 5 and 6pm. A fabulous online auction will run from September 11-18. Organize ahead and hold your own Lobsterfest Dinner Parties at home! Find details on our website here or contact Rosemary Clark 519-822-4687.
  • The Rotary Digital Duck Race 2020 started selling tickets today! Read all about it on our website here. It's important to note that this event and fundraising is being shared by all four Rotary Clubs of Guelph, as part of celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Guelph. Some $15,000 in prizes can be won, so buy your own tickets soon and help spread the word.
  • In another wonderful tribute to Rotary's Guelph Centennial, read here how the Rotary Club of Guelph-Trillium has been celebrating Rotary in hundreds of ways!
  • Remember to let Noma Vales know whether you plan to join our Fellowship Picnic at Riverside Park on Saturday, September 12 at 12 noon. Bring your own lunch, drink and a lawn chair. Family and friends welcome!
  • Birthdays: Paul Pennock is celebrating his 90th birthday today,  September 4th! Andreanne Simard has a birthday next week on September 10 - Andreanne is at home with her little baby born in May.
  • Rotary Anniversaries:  Carl Jadeski, 46 years; Paul Taylor, 28 years; Rick Le Feuvre, 5 years; Sean Yo, 2 years. Wow. Congratulations to all!
  • Sue Ricketts is doing better each day and thanks members for staying in touch. She really appreciates it.
  • Dan Vitale sends greetings. Great news - they are expecting TWINS in November!
  • Rotary Local Lager is coming to an end. Helmuth Slisaranko has only 10 cases left, so order quickly. What a history-making Rotary project this has been!
  • The Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition pin acknowledges individuals who have contributed, or had contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). So when an individual receives a pin like this one, with five sapphires, it means he or she has reached this contribution-level five times.
  • The Rotary Foundation is an endowment fund of Rotary International that enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. TRF funding supports things like Global Grants, the End Polio campaign, etc. Its global importance cannot be emphasized enough, and that is why our club has decided to donate 10% from all our fundraising to The Rotary Foundation. Take a moment to learn more about it, and please keep it in mind for your donations portfolio.
Program this week:

Three Honourary Paul Harris Fellowship Awards were presented today, continuing our centennial celebration of recognizing 100 exceptional individuals and their contributions in making the world a better place.

An Honourary Paul Harris Fellowship Award, named after the founder of Rotary, is one of the highest honours that Rotary International can bestow upon a person. It recognizes recipients for their outstanding contributions that exemplify the highest ideal in Rotary of delivering “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.”

All three recipients today were nominated by Ab Moore who also articulated their extraordinary accomplishments. Ab summarized that Service Above Self means doing good in the world and expecting nothing in return - such as all three had done, many times over.

Today's PHF honourees were:

Menno VanHarten, for his work in the establishment of affordable retirement housing in Guelph.

Gary and Janice Partlow, for their work in welcoming and settling refugees in Guelph.

Program next week:

Graham Taylor - lead of the Machine Learning Research Group at the University of Guelph.
