CALLING FOR READING BUDDY VOLUNTEERS

Do you have an hour per week to Read with a Child?

Rotarians have been volunteering for a few years with students who just need an extra bit of time with an adult. Priory Park Elementary School and Rotary have a great system in place and we’d love for you to join us as a Reading Buddy volunteer.

If you’re available for an hour during the school day (exact times and week days to be arranged), please contact Marguerite Campbell at campbell.marguerite@gmail.com and she will get back to you with details.

Thank you for considering another opportunity for Service Above Self.

OUR PROGRAM ON SEPTEMBER 18 WAS ABOUT

GUELPH'S NEW MAIN LIBRARY OPENING IN 2027, AND REMEMBERING PAUL & JEAN TRUEX

Excitement is mounting for the opening of the Guelph Public Library's new Central Library on Baker Street. A project 35 years in the making (yes, thirty five), construction will be completed by the end of 2026, with move-in completed by the spring of 2027. Meanwhile, the streetscape has already been updated with sidewalks, benches and flowerboxes.

Michelle Campbell, deputy CEO of the Guelph Public Library, provided an overview and update about the project, accompanied by Kristen Bester, the library's Development Officer, to answer questions. This space will truly be a jewel in the crown of downtown and have a huge impact for the satellite branches!

At the meeting, two of our deeply loved and admired Rotary figures, the late Paul and Jean Truex, were remembered and honoured by their son, Paul Truex Jr, who visited to help celebrate how delighted his parents would have been to see the new library become a reality. Both senior Truexes believed that β€œA child with a library card is a child with a future.” The Truex family has made a donation to the new library and they encourage others in our community to do the same. Here is a link

The Truex family also made a donation to Hospice Wellington, a service and location that his parents strongly supported and where Paul Sr. spent his final days in comfort and peace.

In remembering Paul Truex Sr., Tracey Curtis commented that his wisdom and legacy live on, because whenever a tricky situation arises, many of us still say, β€œWhat would Paul do?”
