Our club's 2020-2021 Rotary year in review - Swan Song
Jun. 25, 2021
This Friday marks our last club meeting the 2020-2021 Rotary year. As per tradition, our outgoing club president will present a review of the past year. President Tracey - the floor is yours! President Tracey’s Swan Song Can you believe it has been a year since Tracey took over Presidential duties for our Rotary Club? This week Tracey will close out her year with a review of all that has happened during Rotary year 2020/2021 and then turn the reins over to incoming President Mahmud. The dictionary defines “Swan Song” as a final performance before a person retires. Somehow it is not likely Tracey will retire, but instead move on to other responsibilities in Rotary. Hopefully we can all attend this meeting to show our gratitude to Tracey for a job very well done!!

Building Awareness to Human Trafficking - Rotary Speaker Series (#1 of 5)
Jul. 27, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Mark your calendar for the first presentation in this local Rotary Speaker Series, hosted by the Rotary Club of Guelph South, on Eradicating Human Trafficking. Details to follow. Email Debbie Allen for more information. To register for this free presentation on July 27, 2021 click here: https://bit.ly/3xXKx7S When we hear the words “human trafficking,” we tend to think that this is something that happens in big cities. Sadly this is not true, and with the 401 highway, this crime is big business right here in our community. Spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Guelph South, local Rotary members have come together to tackle this issue, starting with an awareness campaign. To volunteer with this committee, or for more information, email Debbie Allen at the Guelph South club. On the 4th Tuesday of every month, starting on July 27, 2021, you can hear five different presentations about the various aspects of human trafficking – from the organizations that work to create increased awareness to survivors themselves who will share their stories. We are starting on July 27 with Bob Burnside and Sherri Moir who are with CRY NOT, a voluntary organization based in Orangeville (supported by Rotary) whose mandate is to create awareness of threat, tactics, symptoms and resulting devastating personal effects of Human Trafficking to the greater Dufferin Caledon communities. To register, go to https://bit.ly/3xXKx7S Future dates in this Speaker Series are August 24, September 28, October 26, November 30. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us. This session will be online and free. ABOUT CRY NOT: Compass Rotary Youth – NO Trafficking. CRY NOT is a volunteer organization formed by two recognized and respected groups within the Dufferin Caledon community. The Rotary Club of Orangeville and Compass Community Church were both moved to action when made aware of the threat of Human Trafficking in their area. Neither party felt qualified to undertake the involved follow-up work that can be required with Human Trafficking victims. Both parties however, did feel strongly about their ability to bring awareness of the threat, tactics, symptoms and resulting devastating personal effects of Human Trafficking to the greater Dufferin Caledon communities. |

Building Awareness to Human Trafficking - Rotary Speaker Series (#3 of 5)
Sep. 28, 2021 7:00 p.m.
TO REGISTER GO TO: bit.ly/36UySv3
With our proximity to the 400 highways, it means that most of all human trafficking in Canada happens using that route. It also means that it is happening right on our doorstep in Guelph.
In this third session of our Building Awareness of Human Trafficking project, we have brought together three service providers who provide support and help to survivors of human trafficking.
Luisa Krause is the Director of Elora House, an agency that provides short-term housing and support to women exploited by sex trafficking, helping them to make healthy and informed decisions about their lives.
Kevin Coghill is the Executive Director and Pastor at the Royal City Mission where they provide meals to the vulnerable, working to make the invisible visible in our community.
Nicky Carswell is the Co-ordinator of the Anti-Human Trafficking Program at the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region (SASC) where a trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist approach is provided.

Dec. 03, 2021 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
This will be an in-person meeting at the ICC. Speaker will address our club via Zoom link. We are trying to coordinate with a Zoom link for members unable to attend in person. Karen D. Kendrick-Hands I co-founded the Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group (ESRAG) because I could combine my passions for Rotary Service and mitigating the climate crisis, and because Rotary needed a place for like-minded Rotarians to collaborate. I believe that the ultimate “Service above Self” is ensuring a stable climate for future generations. Karen, an attorney, has been a volunteer public interest advocate for cleaner air, mobility and transportation choices, including serving on various local, state and regional advisory bodies, for over 30 years. She has founded advocacy groups, including Transportation Riders United in greater Detroit , assisted non-environmental community and service organizations, including the Junior League, and League of Women Voters to frame and adopt environmental positions, worked with national US groups such as the Clean Air Network, participated in an official international environmental law exchange between the US and former Soviet Union, and created community connections with unlikely partners – finding common interests where none were obvious.

Dec. 03, 2021 12:15 p.m.
This will be an in-person meeting held at the ICC. The speaker will address our club via Zoom link. Karen Kendrick-Hands, a member of the Rotary Club of Madison, WI, USA, D6250 since 2012, co-founded the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), to synergize her passions for Rotary Service, protecting the environment and mitigating climate change by providing a way for like-minded Rotarians to collaborate. She has served as ESRAG’s Chair, Director of Communications, and Director of Projects. She is a member of Rotary International’s delegation to COP26, the UNFCCC climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, November 2021, and also attended COP24, as RI’s first observer delegate in December 2018. In February 2020, Karen presented to the Rotary Foundation’s Environmental Issues Task Force, on behalf of ESRAG. Rotary International’s Directors and the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation accepted the Taskforce report unanimously and have created a seventh Area of Focus: Protecting the Environment. Karen is active with the Wisconsin Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby and is the Co-leader of its Rotary Action Team. When active as an attorney, Karen worked as a volunteer public interest advocate for cleaner air and mobility and transportation choices, including serving on various local, state and regional advisory bodies, for over 30 years. Karen is blessed to have been a Rotary Youth Exchange student in 1967-68 to Australia. Karen and her husband Larry Hands, also a Rotarian and ESRAG Board member, have been married for 47 years, and have two married sons and three grandchildren. Together they have built a carbon-neutral home and are restoring prairie and savanna habitat on 80 acres in southwest Wisconsin, USA.
