Why I can't "Just get over it"
Sep. 25, 2020
On September 25, the closest Friday to ORANGE SHIRT DAY, SEPTEMBER 30 (read about it on our website here), our club's Indigenous Awareness Committee is proud to present an outstanding presenter to share her real-life experience. Nicole Mascherin is a second-generation residential school survivor. In a powerful talk, she will share the difficulties she experienced as a child growing up with a mother who was dealing with trauma experienced at St. Anne’s residential school, and explain Why I can't "Just get over it". Today, Nicole serves her community as current President of the BEL Rotary Club (Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield) in Selwyn Township (north of Peterborough), as District Chair of Indigenous Focus, District Co-ordinator of Rotary HIP, 7010 and President of the Board of Lovesick Lake Native Women's Association ( LLNWA) in Lakefield, Ontario. She also works with Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS) which is a corporation with a mandate to provide safe and affordable housing to urban and rural First Nation, Inuit and Métis people living off-Reserve in Ontario. Nicole is also a Sales Representative for Chestnut Park Real Estate in Lakefield, ON. A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
Many Canadians remain poorly informed about the history of residential schools and the generational after-effects, so here is a great chance to learn by attending a 1.5 hour webinar presented by the Rotary Club of Pickering and the Rotary-inspired HIP organization (Honouring Indigenous People). It's on September 30, 2020 from 4pm to 5.30pm. Details and pre-registration are here.

Crossing Africa, by foot and kayak
Oct. 02, 2020 12:30 p.m.
Mario Rigby is an intrepid eco-explorer, currently based in Toronto … when he isn’t on a new adventure. In 2018, Mario completed his Crossing Africa journey, a two-year, 12,000km trek walking and kayaking from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt. It was an expedition intended to connect with communities and share their stories with the world. Along the way, he was tested physically and emotionally in ways that would make most people stop short. But his main take-aways are his lessons in humanity and overcoming fear, lessons that are worth sharing. If time permits, Mario might even tell us a little about his coast-to-coast adventure, Cycling Canada, from Victoria, BC to St. John’s Newfoundland, covering 7,300km in 89 days. Or perhaps share the planning for his next adventure: exploring climate change in British Columbia and the effects on the river systems and First Nations communities that reside there, with the support of The Explorers Club and the Discovery Channel. Mario’s goal is to inspire people locally and globally to get out, be brave, and see the world. |

Rotarian Pioneer: first ever female president of a Rotary Club
Oct. 16, 2020
You won't want to miss this talk about Rotary history!
Dr. Sylvia Whitlock is an American humanitarian who was the first woman to serve as president of any Rotary Club. In 1987, she became president of the Rotary Club of Duarte (California) making her the first woman to hold such a position within Rotary International. The chapter's charter had previously been revoked in 1978 after they admitted women which was against Rotary International policy. The Duarte club took the issue to court and finally, in May 1987, after the case went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, Rotary International was forced to remove its gender requirements for club charters, finally allowing women to join. (Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Whitlock) Besides explaining this fascinating chapter in Rotary's history, Dr. Whitlock will also share her humanitarian work that still keeps her busy, 33 years later. |

This week we will be treated to a rewind with our own Dr. Lawrie Jones. Lawrie is a retired dentist and a Rotarian for 48 years. In his years as a dentist Lawrie built a substantial practice on Cork Street in downtown Guelph. Many members of our club were Lawrie’s patients. As a Rotarian Lawrie was/is an inspiration. He is a Past President and has been active in many areas of Rotary and the Rotary Club of Guelph Charitable Foundation. This is a great opportunity for all members, and especially newer members, to get to know one of our best. |
