Invisible North: The search for answers on a trouble reserve
Feb. 01, 2019
When former Maclean’s editor Alexandra Shimo arrives in Kashechewan, a fly-in, northern Ontario reserve, to investigate rumours of a fabricated water crisis and to document its deplorable living conditions, she soon finds herself drawn into the troubles of the reserve. Unable to cope with the desperate circumstances, she begins to fall apart. A moving tribute to the power of hope and resilience, Invisible North is an intimate portrait of a place where survival is a daily challenge. Part memoir, part history of the Canadian reserves, Shimo offers an expansive exploration and unorthodox take on many of the Native issues that dominate the news today, including suicide crises, murdered and missing indigenous women and girls, Treaty rights, Native Sovereignty, and deep poverty.

Where we are, one year after starting the pilot program
Mar. 01, 2019
One year ago, in March 2018, the four Rotary Clubs of Guelph provided startup funding for a local Food4Kids program to provide weekend food bags to school children at risk of going hungry on weekends. Still actively supported by Rotary volunteers, this program is going so well it will soon go solo! Don't miss this update. |

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
May 10, 2019
Margaret Mackinnon became interested in post-traumatic stress disorder in the most terrifying way. In August of 2001, McKinnon, at the time a post-doctoral student, left Toronto on Air Transat Flight 236 to enjoy her honeymoon in Portugal. But she and 305 other people on the plane almost didn’t make it when the plane ran out of fuel over the Atlantic Ocean due to a leak in one of the engines. Both engines ended up quitting and only the remarkable work by the pilot saved those on board. The pilot was able to glide the plane for 18 minutes before performing a miraculous landing on a small island air base. Everyone survived. This experience led Margaret into focusing on PTSD research. She is now the Homewood Research Chair in Mental Health and Trauma and an associate professor at McMaster University.
